Leading the Way to Success in Latin America 2010

Introducción
Buenos Aires - Business Studies in Latin America, Course 7, 25 ECTS Credits (23.1.-23.5.2010)
JAMK and the private university Universidad Argentina de la Empresa (UADE), located in Buenos Aires and specialized in entrepreneurship, offer the opportunity to complete the course ”Business Studies in Latin America” (25 ECTS credits) in English. The programme focuses on the economy and business environment of Argentina, Chile, Brazil and Mexico. It can be used as part of the specialization studies of economics / business administration at universities and universities of applied sciences.

Descripción del Programa
The four-month course will take place at UADE, in the centre of Buenos Aires, from 23 January to 23 May 2010. In addition to business training, the programme includes Spanish courses at three different levels. Visits to companies and organizations are also an integral part of the course. These visits are analyzed to the respective teachers through individual reports, focusing on the perspectives of different themes.

The course content has been designed by JAMK’s School of Business Administration and UADE. The course is implemented by UADE, which also awards the course certificate. The course will be opened by Finnish Ambassador to Argentina Jukka Pietikäinen and Provost of UADE Ana Maria Mass. The commercial secretary of Finpro in Argentina and Chile also participates in the education.

The Significance of Latin America as a Market and Production Area Is Increasing

"Along with the trend in the international division of labor, the production and sales value of Finnish companies in Brazil and Mexico has rapidly increased, now totaling 2.5 billion euros. At the same time, especially SMEs have conquered technology markets through precise segmentation, for example, in the ICT and forest industries of Latin America, including Chile and Argentina.

The business environment of Latin America is challenging. Heavy bureaucracy, a slow judicial system, and ineffective labor legislation highlight the importance of good expert help, particularly at he initial phase. In some of the countries rapid, unexpected changes in exchange rates and official regulations increase the risks.

However, the overall trend is positive. EU’s free-trade agreements with Mexico and Chile have boosted Finnish export and, apart from a few exceptions, the countries are developing their business environment to be more competitive in the international market as exporters and targets for investment."

Matti Landin, Vice President, Finpro Latin America

Brazil Experience
A special Brazilian Experience is offered to the students for the second time. This option, which represents 2 ECTS credits, is implemented in the form of a study tour to the City of Florianópolis in Brazil. The department of Economics at the Federal University of Santa Catarina (Universidade Federal de Santa Catarina) is responsable for the courses " Doing Business in Brasil" and "Trading and Investing in Brasil". The study program also includes a company visit to Certi Technological Foundation, which is a cluster of high- tech SMEs; Digitro or Intelbras - telecommunication companies located in Florianópolis.

The 10-day tour also offers a possibility to enjoy the beautiful beaches of Florianópolis during the weekend on arrival and an extended holiday weekend after the courses. The cost, payable at UADE, is about 500 US$ including the bus trip, hostel accommodation, and study program.
